What is Holistic Psychology?

Being a holistic psychologist means seeing beyond the diagnostic and symptom perspective, taking instead the full spectrum of a clients’ life into consideration – lifestyle factors, physical health, spiritual life, values, and more. We focus on using treatments that are non-pathologizing; this often includes somatic work, polyvagal and nervous system informed exercises, mindfulness, combining non-western healing practices with evidence-based treatments.

Holistic psychology is an approach that views individuals as integrated wholes, encompassing their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions, rather than focusing solely on isolated symptoms or behaviors.It emphasizes the interconnectedness of these aspects and seeks to understand how they influence each other to promote overall well-being.

    Holistic psychology acknowledges that each person is unique and tailors treatment plans to address their specific needs and circumstances.

    Holistic psychology recognizes the powerful influence of the mind on the body and vice versa, incorporating techniques that address both mental and physical well-being. 

  • Interconnectedness:

    Holistic psychology recognizes that mind, body, and spirit are not separate entities but rather components of a unified whole. 

  • Wholeness:

    It emphasizes the importance of considering the individual's complete experience, including their thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and spiritual beliefs, rather than focusing on isolated symptoms. 

 

How Holistic Psychology Differs from Traditional Psychology:

  • Broader Scope:

    Holistic psychology considers a wider range of factors that can contribute to mental health, including lifestyle, relationships, environment, and spiritual beliefs, while traditional approaches may focus more narrowly on specific psychological disorders. 

  • Emphasis on Prevention:

    Holistic psychology emphasizes promoting overall well-being and preventing mental health issues, whereas traditional approaches may be more focused on treating existing conditions. 

  • Integration of Complementary Therapies:

    Holistic psychology often incorporates a variety of complementary therapies, such as mindfulness, yoga, art therapy, and nutritional counseling, alongside traditional psychotherapy.
